Suffering from Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, how about Adrenal Fatigue?
Dr. Solomon’s Fibromyalgia/CFS 5 step approach: Step 5
Exercise
Movement keeps your body functioning optimally because that’s what it was designed to do. Believe it or not your body was never intended to sit behind a desk or a steering wheel for most of the day, it was designed to move. To give you a very brief and possibly crude physiology lesson, our bodies contain things called mechanoreceptors of which there are 4 types. Type 1, 2, 3 and you guessed it, type 4. Types 1, 2 and 3 tell your body where it is in space, so you know where your foot (or any other body part) is without having to look for it. Type 4’s, quite simply are there to make us feel pain. The cool thing is that by getting the types 1, 2 and 3 firing we inhibit the type 4’s. The type 1, 2 and 3’s fire a lot when we move and fire less when we don’t. So the more you move, the less the type 4’s fire, the less they fire, the less pain you feel. Get it? Moving = less pain. Why do you think you instinctively rub your arm when you bump it? Rubbing it creates movement in the tissue causing the type 1, 2 and 3’s to fire which inhibit the type 4’s which in turn decreases the sensation of pain. It’s not rocket science, but it’s pretty cool anyway.
The difference when prescribing exercise to a patient population suffering from Fibro or CFS is to do so with great care. Although exercise is a cornerstone to almost all holistic treatment approaches it needs to be done with caution.
Exercise within your ability, but not less. Cardiovascular exercise has seen the most benefits with CFS and FMS and so that is what I’d suggest you do… at mild to moderate levels.
If the thought of exercise doesn’t get you excited then try think about it differently. Go for a walk in the mountains or swim in the ocean. The goal of exercise for CFS and FMS is not the same as with athletic performance. I’m not trying to build athletes with this type of exercise prescription, I’m just trying to get you moving again so that all your cells and organs can start talking to each other again.
Movement is key, it’s that simple.
