Suffering from Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, how about Adrenal Fatigue?
Dr. Solomon’s Fibromyalgia/CFS 5 step approach: Step 1
Fibromyalgia, Adrenal Fatigue and CFS are treatable! These rather complex diseases have often taken years to present in your body and will take some time to be reversed… BUT they are most definitely treatable… as long as you’re following this 5 step approach…
Two of the most ignored steps when following a traditional medical treatment plan for CFS and Fibromyalgia are Sleep and Nutrition. My full treatment plan consists of a 5 step process of which these are just two.
I’ll discuss Sleep now and follow up with Nutrition and the others in the next posts.
Sleep
There are many natural sleep remedies from melatonin to essential oils that can help. Getting the required 8-9 hours per night is essential if you’re managing a condition that is essentially an “Energy Crisis” as with CFS and Fibromyalgia.
If you’re constantly waking up in the early morning, 2 am-3 am, it could be due to a drop in blood sugar. Try eating a protein snack before bedtime like a boiled egg and avoid sugary snacks before you go to sleep as they can make the problem worse.
If you find that frequent urination keeps waking you up, then the obvious tip would be not drink too much before bedtime, but another thing to try is to sit with your legs elevated for 20-30 minutes before bedtime.
Below I’ve outlined some of my favourite supplements to help with sleep for Fibromyalgia and CFS
Melatonin : No more than half a milligram at bedtime. Any higher than that, consult your doctor. Melatonin is a powerful hormone created in the pineal gland and should be treated with carefully.
5-HTP 300mg daily
Until recently both Melatonin and 5-HTP were available over the counter at your local health food shop however they have both been re-registered as prescription supplements and would require a prescription from your medical doctor.
Calcium 600mg/Magnesium 200mg: Always take these two supplements together.
L-Theanine: Is an amino acid that has been associated with the production of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) as well as the formation of Alpha brain waves (present when in a restful meditative state). Although present in Green Tea, the amount of tea you would have to drink would be counterproductive with how much you’ll be up going to the bathroom so rather take this as a supplement. Take 50-200mg at bedtime.
Wild lettuce: Take 30-120mg of the extract at bedtime
Jamaican Dogwood: Take 12-48mg of the extract at bedtime.
Hops: The Hops plant is part of the Hemp family where the female flowers are used for beer making. Hops has been shown to suppress breast, colon and ovarian cancer as well as reduce hot flashes in menopausal women. Hops has also shown to have antibiotic and antifungal properties. Take 30-120 mg of Hops extract at bedtime.
Passiflora: Passiflora has been shown to be successful in addressing muscle spasms, colic, dysentery, diarrhoea, anxiety, menstrual pain and low libido. Passiflora has pain management benefits and may be useful in managing the chronic pains associated with CFS and Fibromyalgia. Take 90-360mg of the extract at bedtime.
Valerian: Valerian is commonly used as a sleep remedy with many studies showing its effectiveness in improving deep sleep, speed of falling asleep and quality of sleep. The benefits of Valerian are best seen after use over an extended period of time as opposed to once-off consumption. Take 200-800 mg of the extract at bedtime.
To recover from any disease process we need to create a healing environment in our body first and then give body what it needs to facilitate the healing. Sleep is the one thing you cannot ignore when treating any disease or injury. Proper sleep forms the foundation that all your other treatments will build on. Try get your sleep sorted before you waste your time on anything else.
